Distinguished and Famous people from Claremont

📚 Dame Mary Durack

Writer Mary Durack attended Claremont Practising School before continuing her education at Loreto Convent. Her family recognised her early interest in writing and published a small volume of her poetry while she was still a child. Later books explored the history and experiences of the pastoral world closely associated with her family, particularly the Kimberley. Born in Adelaide, she spent her earliest years on northern cattle stations before the Perth school years helped develop her literary interests.

📜 Mervyn Austin

Mervyn Austin served on the council of Christ Church Grammar School at Claremont alongside a long university career in classics. From 1952 he built the University of Western Australia’s teaching in Greek, Latin and ancient history, taking a one-person department into a much larger programme. Radio broadcasts and community courses carried his enthusiasm to people outside university, and he continued teaching in retirement. The Claremont connection is a documented educational governance role, part of a commitment to learning that extended from school pupils to mature students.

🎭 Jeana Bradley

Jeana Bradley completed her schooling at Methodist Ladies’ College in Claremont and later trained at the local teachers’ college. Before her university career she also held a monitorship at Claremont Central School. Theatre eventually became the centre of her working life, with school productions leading to decades of teaching and directing in Perth. Her Hamlet opened UWA’s New Fortune Theatre in 1964. The Claremont years belong to the education and early teaching behind that theatrical contribution, when a future producer was still learning how to work with pupils and audiences.
